Sedation Instructions

Office Sedation Instruction

You have been scheduled for sedation for an office procedure. Please make sure to bring a driver with you on the day of the procedure, as you cannot be sedated without one being present. The procedures will not take long so your driver needs to stay at the facility. The sedation that you will receive will have you fully asleep. You will be groggy when you leave but will wake up quickly after leaving. NO DRIVING FOR 8 HOURS AFTER LEAVING THE OFFICE.

To promote a more pleasant experience and to maximize your safety, please pay special attention to the following:

  • Nothing to eat or drink, including gum or mints, after midnight the night before your scheduled procedure time. IF your procedure is scheduled at 12 o'clock or later, you may have clear liquids (black coffee, apple juice, sports drinks or water; NO carbonated beverages, sodas or milk/creamer beverages) up to 2 hours prior to your scheduled procedure.
  • Example if your procedure is scheduled at 1:00PM you can have clear liquids until 11:00AM
  • Please take your regularly scheduled medicines with a small amount of water, including high blood pressure medicine
  • If you take blood thinners, make sure that the physician that scheduled your procedure is aware and following their instructions about stopping or continuing these medicines prior to procedure
  • If you are treated for diabetes, please DO NOT take your diabetes pills the evening before or the day of your procedure. If you take insulin or shots, take HALF or your regular dose
  • If you are diabetic and check your blood sugar daily, check your blood sugar prior to coming to the office, and tell your anesthesia provider
  • If you have sleep apnea and use CPAP, there is no need to bring your CPAP machine with you
  • Please take 2 Extra Strength Tylenol (500 mg each) with sip of water 2 hours before your surgery is scheduled. If you have liver disease DO NOT take the Tylenol
  • Wear loose fitting clothing that is easy to get in and out of. DO NOT wear long sleeve shirts, since an IV will be placed for your sedation
  • Wear shoes that can be easily slipped on and off
  • DO NOT wear contacts the day of the procedure
